blog in a bad neighborhood? don’t forget to lockdown
hello there! if you're new here and like what you read, you may want to grab the rss feed so you can always be up to date. thanks for visiting!
do you blog in a bad neighborhood? do you think there are people who might have a grudge against your blog? or are simply worried that the competition doesn’t like to play fair? well if you’re concerned about people breaking and entering your blog, you don’t have to be anymore.
i got an email from michael vandemar pointing me to a rather useful wordpress plugin that he has developed, called login lockdown. the plugin records the ip address and timestamp of every failed attempt to log into your wordpress blog. if there are more than a certain number of failed attempts in quick succession from the same ip range, the plugin will automatically disable the login function for that range.
this helps to prevent brute force password discovery. currently the plugin defaults to a 1 hour lock out of an IP block after 3 failed login attempts within 5 minutes. this can be modified via the options panel. admisitrators can release locked out ip ranges manually from the panel.
check out the plugin: login lockdown v1.1 or learn more about the plugin from michael.

Hah, I blog in a bad neighborhood literally though hopefully not metaphorically. I keep telling myself I should start a blog with a crackhead cam - there’s more than enough material right out in front of where I live
.
Also I’d recommend the WordPress Database Backup plugin so if someone does get in at least you have things saved. You can set it up for automatic weekly backups.

I only wish someone developed a WP plugin for bloggers to be aware of more difficult to cope examples of unfair competition - like burying a blog on Digg
But this definitely is a useful idea, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

muhammad, thank you again for blogging about this plugin.
Just to let you know, I just updated the files finally to version 1.2, so that it is compatible with WordPress 2.5.1, in case you wanted to update the download link.
Peace.
